Program Information

Education Goal
Participants will receive evidence-based education that will help them prevent the spread of MRSA among ED patients and staff.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of the rising incidence of community-associated Staphylococcus infections and MRSA in emergency department settings.
  2. List factors to consider for accurately diagnosing antibiotic-resistant infections.
  3. Explain the current recommendations for managing and preventing Staphylococcus infections and MRSA in the emergency department.
  4. Explain the indications for and choice of medications for treating MRSA.
  5. Explain the proper technique for incision and drainage procedures that minimizes recurrence and spread of infection.
  6. Recognize the steps that can be taken to prevent ED staff from becoming infected or colonized by MRSA, with potential spread to colleagues, patients and family.

Target Audience
Emergency Department physicians in the United States.

Implementation
The estimated time for completion of this program is two hours. In order to get the greatest value from this program we recommend a four-step process:

  1. Read this manual, taking notes as necessary.
  2. Carefully read the test questions and select your answers.
  3. Return to the manual for a final review of your notes and finalize your test answers.
  4. Complete and submit the CME answer sheet and course evaluation via mail, fax or internet.
