Education
Goal:
Participants will receive evidence-based education that will
help them prevent the spread of MRSA among ED patients and staff.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the
participant will be able to:
- Recognize the importance of the rising
incidence of community-associated Staphylococcus infections and
MRSA in emergency department settings.
- List factors to consider for
accurately diagnosing antibiotic-resistant infections.
- Explain
the current recommendations for managing and preventing Staphylococcus
infections and MRSA in the emergency department.
- Explain the
indications for and choice of antibiotics for attempted decolonization
in ED patients.
- Explain the proper technique for incision and
drainage procedures that minimizes recurrence and spread of infection.
- Recognize the steps that can be taken to prevent ED staff
from becoming infected or colonized by MRSA, with potential spread
to colleagues, patients and family.
