Goals & Objectives

Education Goal:
Participants will receive evidence-based education that will help them prevent the spread of MRSA among ED patients and staff.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of the rising incidence of community-associated Staphylococcus infections and MRSA in emergency department settings.
  2. List factors to consider for accurately diagnosing antibiotic-resistant infections.
  3. Explain the current recommendations for managing and preventing Staphylococcus infections and MRSA in the emergency department.
  4. Explain the indications for and choice of antibiotics for attempted decolonization in ED patients.
  5. Explain the proper technique for incision and drainage procedures that minimizes recurrence and spread of infection.
  6. Recognize the steps that can be taken to prevent ED staff from becoming infected or colonized by MRSA, with potential spread to colleagues, patients and family.
